Tigers Open ICAC Play at Home with Ravens

The DePauw football team is looking to regroup from last week's 51-9 loss at Albion as they open Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday with Anderson. The Tigers, 2-1, host the 3-0 Ravens in a 1:30 p.m. contest at Blackstock Stadium in Greencastle.

SCOUTING ANDERSON

The Ravens returned 14 starters from last year's team which finished 6-4. This season Anderson has won all three games with wins over Walsh (13-12), Taylor (37-27) and Olivet (27-14). They aver age 328 yards of offense to their opponent's 290.7 and more than two-thirds of that offense comes on the ground. Jacob Crowe averages over 87 rushing yards per outing, while Brian Schenberg totals over 74 per game. Quarterback Michael Mosser has completed 44 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and six interceptions. Mosser missed much of last season with an injury, but has played a big part in the Ravens' success in recent years. The top receiver is Troy Cossel with five catches for 79 yards. The Ravens' offensive line returned starting tackles Ryan Martin and Jason Trebley.

The Anderson defense returns seven starters including three lineman, two linebackers and two defensive backs. The Ravens lead the ICAC in pass efficiency defense and are allowing opponents just a 40.4 completion percentage. Meanwhile they have picked off the opposition 11 times. The Ravens ranked second in the nation, behind DePauw, last week in pass efficiency defense. Aaron Patterson leads the team with 27 tackles followed by Steve Pyle with 22. Matt Anderson has four interceptions, while Pyle leads the way with three tackles for loss.

REVIEWING LAST YEAR'S GAME

Everything went the Tigers' way in last year's game as the Old Gold won by a 45-13 score. The Tigers' offense was seemingly unstoppable, compiling 417 total yards, 290 of which came on the ground. The Tigers' defense was equally impressive, allowing Anderson a mere 26 yards rushing on 28 attempts.

Johnathon Stigall and Andy Roberts accounted for 116 and 71 yards, respectively, out of the tailback position. Mark Melchiorre added 85 yards from his fullback spot and quarterback Bernie Haskins tossed three touchdown passes. On defense, Matt McLure, Tim Cooper, Grant Hale, and Kevin Condict each had one sack. Chris Rowe had his first interception of the season to go along with seven tackles. Matt MacPherson had seven tackles, all of which came in the fourth quarter. Anderson's two quar terbacks combined to total 279 yards through the air.

REVIEWING LAST WEEK'S TIGERS GAME

Despite the fact that the Tigers lost at Albion by a 51-9 count, the game was tight through the first quarter. The teams exchanged field goals on their first possession with Jason Gardner booting a 37 -yarder for the Tigers.

Early in the second the Britons scored to take a 10-3 lead. Twice on their next series, the Tigers were forced to punt but an Albion penalty and then a fumble on a punt return gave the Tigers the ball on the Albion 33. The Old Gold failed to pick up a first down, but punted to the Albion seven yard line. The Britons wasted no time in responding as quarterback Kyle Klein connected with Chris Barnett for a 93-yard score.

The Tigers then drove into Albion territory on their next series, but Bernie Haskins' (Jr., Elkhart/Central) second down pass was picked off and returned for a touchdown. In a six-minute span, Albion scored 21 points to take a 24-3 lead. DePauw then scored with 3:12 left as David Schubert (So., Coatesville/North Putnam) ran in from two yards out. Albion, however, scored twice in the final 2:23 to take a 37-9 halftime lead.

Haskins completed 20 of 43 passes for 213 yards with two interceptions. His top targets were Brian Jennings (So., Tell City/Tell City) with five catches for 74 yards and Joe Cheshire (So., Indianapolis/North Central). The Tigers totaled 342 yards of offense including 308 through the air. Klein completed 20 of 32 passes for Albion for 370 yards and three touchdowns. Barnett, an all-American receiver caught 11 passes for 282 yards. Tackle Tim Capper (Sr., Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) led the Tiger defense with nine tackles including one for loss.

ALBION GAME MVPs

The coaching staff selected three individuals as most valuable players in the Tigers' 51-9 loss at Albion. On offense, Brian Jennings got the nod with five catches for 75 yards. Those catches were the first of his career. On defense, tackle Tim Capper totaled nine tackles including seven solos or first hits and one for a four-yard loss. Jon Holloway (Sr., Fishers/Cathedral) was the special teams selection after re turning three kickoffs a total of 69 yards and downed a punt at the Albion seven yard line.

ONE STREAK CONTINUES; ANOTHER ENDS

Jay Pettigrew (Sr., Indianapolis/North Central) caught four passes on Saturday to extend his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 32 straight. Jamie Cunha (Sr., Westford, Mass. /Westford Academy) entered the Albion game with a streak of 23 straight games, but failed to catch a pass in his less than one half of play.

YOU CAN CALL HIM SLASH

Senior corner Jon Holloway is a standout defensive back and kick returner, but he has the distinction in his career of having scored touchdowns via kickoff, punt and interception returns as well as rush ing and receiving.

MOVING UP THE CHARTS

Several Tigers continue their move up the all-time leaders lists. Jay

Pettigrew with 121 career receptions ranks fifth in DePauw history and needs just seven more to move into fourth and ahead of current Tiger defensive line coach Kevin Perkins. Pettigrew topped the DePauw tight end record of 119 catches held by Greg Werner (1985-88), a former NFL player with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles Pettigrew's 1,258 career receiving yards ranks eighth all -time. He needs nine more yards to pass former Canadian Football Leaguer Terry Dickey's (1988-91) 1,266 Jamie Cunha's 96 receptions is the eighth most in DePauw history and his 1,659 career receiv ing yards is the fifth highest Jon Holloway 's 964 kickoff return yards ranks third and his 476 punt return yards is second behind Tim Weaver's 1,018 from 1982-86. Cunha's 108 points is ninth at DePauw Jon Holloway's 12 career interceptions ranks in a tie for sixth in DePauw history, while Scott Farnham's 10 is tied for 10th Through last Saturday's game, Farnham ranked in a tie for third with 1.33 interceptions per game (four in three games) Haskins ranks 29th in the nation in passing efficiency with 142.9 points.
