Tigers Battle Back from 10-0 Deficit to Beat Visiting Adrian 12-11
Greencastle, Ind. - A warm and windy day provided plenty of offensive fireworks at Walker Field on Friday as DePauw came all the way back from a 10-0 deficit to win 12-11 over visiting Adrian.
The Bulldogs scored three in the first on a three-run homer off the scoreboard in left and seven in the third including a grand slam to center to take a 10-0 lead going into the bottom of the third.
DePauw scored once in the third on Jared Johnson's (Jr., St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield) RBI single and plated seven more in the fourth. The seven-run uprising was highlighted by Rob Kiburz's (Jr., Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) three-run homer off the scoreboard.
Adrian added one more in the fifth before DePauw scored two more in the bottom of the fifth.Again it was Johnson with a run-scoring single and an Adrian error that brought the Old to 11-10.
Matt Walker (So., Crawfordsville/Crawfordsville) entered the game in the top of the fifth and retired all eight men he faced to set the stage for the dramatic finish.
Kiburz led off the seventh with a single to right. Mike Thieken's (Sr., Indianapolis/Bishop Chatard) sacrifice bunt resulted in an Adrian throwing error that allowed Kiburz to go to third. Johnson then singled down the left field line to score Kiburz and tie the game. Tom Fagan (Jr., LaPorte/ LaPorte) hit into a fielder's choice to tie, but Thieken advanced to third on the play. Tom Heldt (Sr., Evansville/Harrison) then lifted a fly ball to center field to drive in the winning run.
